Lately I’ve been very busy writing my thesis, and often I find myself looking for the “right word”. Online dictionaries are useful, but sometimes a bit of a drag to use. I’d like to introduce you to a really useful tool - Thinkmap’s Visual Thesaurus. It is an interactive dictionary and thesaurus with a very innovative display. Words literally come to life in the interactive word maps, branching to related words and displaying the meaning in a clear and concise manner.
Simply type in the word you want to look up and begin exploring!
The tool is available in a desktop edition and an online edition. The online edition is only $19.95/year or $2.95 per month.
The purpose of knowledge management is to harness, develop and direct the expertise of the organisation and to apply it effectively to achieve strategic objectives. Its purpose is also to encourage learning and innovation as sources of competitive advantage.

Dr Steve New’s research focuses on buyer-seller interactions and supply chain management. Currently he is working on a project with Achilles Information Ltd on the emergence of Business-to-Business e-commerce. Other recent and current projects include the effect of vendor rating systems on supplier performance, the impact of environmental issues in supply chain relationships, and the development of cost models for high technology businesses.
I‘m currently busy transcribing interviews and focus group sessions for my research. All I can say is that it is a painful and tedious job!
In trying to ease the pain, I searched for software that could make it a bit easier. I came across a tool called InqScribe that is really useful. All you need to do is import the audio or video file, hit the play button and you’re away. You can play the audio at a slower rate so that you can type almost at the same speed than the play-back. You can also define shortcut keys, and ’snippets’ which enable you to define trigger keys for each person in a focus group session, for example. Every time a person speaks up, you simply hit the corresponding ’snippet’ key, which then inserts a timestamp and the person’s initials, or name. After this you transcribe what ever the person is saying.
InqScribe has a trial version available, and you can also apply for a 30 day evaluation copy. The biggest bonus is that they offer student and academic discounts!
I recommend this product to everybody struggling with transcriptions.
